The international shipping fee is determined by the weight and size of the product, the destination country, and the selected shipping method. Before ordering, you can check an estimated amount using the International Shipping Fee Simulator.
Factors determining the the international shipping fee
The international shipping fee is calculated based on the following four factors.
- The actual weight of the product
- The size of the product (volumetric weight calculated from length, width, and height)
- The destination country/region
- The shipping method (EMS, DHL, FedEx, ECMS, etc.)
The weight used to calculate the shipping fee differs depending on the shipping method.
| Shipping method | Weight used for calculation |
|---|---|
| EMS / International Air Packet (formerly ePacket Light) | Actual weight |
| DHL / FedEx / ECMS | The greater of the volumetric weight and the actual weight |
What is volumetric weight?
Volumetric weight is the weight calculated from the length, width, and height of the product. For items that are large but lightweight, the volumetric weight may be exceed the actual weight, resulting in a higher shipping fee.
The formula for calculating volumetric weight depends on the shipping method:
| Shipping method | Formula for volumetric weight |
|---|---|
| DHL | length (cm) × width (cm) × height (cm) ÷ 5,000 (fractions rounded up in 0.5 kg units) |
| FedEx | length (cm) × width (cm) × height (cm) ÷ 5,000 |
| ECMS | length (cm) × width (cm) × height (cm) ÷ 6,000 (fractions rounded up in 0.5 kg units) |
Example: a package of size 50 cm × 50 cm × 50 cm with an actual weight of 10 kg
- ECMS volumetric weight: (50 × 50 × 50) ÷ 6,000 = approx. 20.83 kg → 21.0 kg
- Since the actual weight of 10 kg is less than the volumetric weight of 21.0 kg, the billed weight is 21.0 kg
Maximum size and weight by shipping method
The maximum size and weight capacity vary by shipping method:
| Shipping method | Maximum size | Maximum weight |
|---|---|---|
| EMS | Varies by destination country | Varies by destination country |
| International Air Packet | Length + Width + Thickness = 90 cm (length max 60 cm) | 2 kg |
| DHL | Length 120 cm × Width 80 cm × Height 80 cm | 70 kg |
| FedEx | Longest side 274 cm; Longest side + girth total 330 cm | 68 kg |
| ECMS | Varies by destination country | Varies by destination country |
